One of the big stories of 2018 is already coming into focus: several theatre companies will be moving into new spaces. One of them was announced today.
Rumors have been floating about that Compass Rose Theater planned to move to a new venue, and today the official press release arrived from Lucinda Merry-Browne, Founding Artistic Director of Compass Rose.

“It’s about time that Annapolis, Maryland’s capitol city, had a first class theatre for professional productions” she told DC Theatre Scene. Bozzuto Homes has offered space in its development of 25 new homes to Compass Rose Theater. The development will be on the property of what is now the WNAV radio station on Admiral Drive.
Thomas A. Baum, President of Bozzuto Homes, Inc and Chester Bartels, of Clockwork Architecture and Design made the announcement with Merry-Browne over a Champaign Toast at the Sunday, December 10 performance of Fiddler on the Roof. Attendees viewed renderings of the new theater which will be 6,800 square feet and have seating for 180 patrons.
The design for the new building, and the construction will require funding from grants, donations, and public funds. Merry-Browne indicated that the theater is up to the challenge of raising the capital. She announced the formation of a new group at the theater, the Compass Rose Navigators, a group of theater supporters who will guide and support the company as it moves toward the goal of the new theater building over the next two to three years.
The first stage in navigating this new course begins at the end of the year. Compass Rose Theater will give it last performance in its Spa Road location on Sunday, December 31st. They will the move to a new temporary location at 1623 Forest Drive in Annapolis.
Fiddler on the Roof, the current show at the theater, will also make the move and close on January 21, 2018 in the new location. Compass Rose patrons will see immediate improvements, Merry-Browne told DC Theatre Scene on Forest Drive: an expanded lobby, a theatre with seating for 100 people, more bathrooms and onsite parking.
Compass Rose Theater invites anyone who wishes to be part of this next phase of its history to contact Lucinda Merry-Browne at [email protected] or 443-534-9033.
As of January, 2018, Compass Rose Theater will be located at 1623 Forest Drive in Annapolis, MD.
