Last night, the Capital Fringe Festival took its exhibitions to new heights – some 300-odd feet up. Last night, thousands of other spectators and I at Milian Park in Northeast witnessed the spectacle that was Dance of The Cranes.
SONATA: The Naked Theatre Project at Capital Fringe
The Naked Theater Project’s SONATA: The Naked Theatre Project, playing at Gallaudet University’s Eastman Studio Theater, is an experimental concerto on suspense and delay. (It’s fully clothed but maturely themed; parents are still advised to leave the kids at home).
‘The Movement: 50 Years of Love and Struggle’ at Capital Fringe
In a piece that is technically a one-man show, Ron Jones speaks for, and as, numerous African Americans. Lyndon Johnson’s Civil Rights Act ignited a social and economic transformation for the black community, and Jones plants us at the center of it. A combination of theater and documentary film, The Movement: 50 Years of Love […]
Wrestling with the WIP at Capital Fringe
The performance of Wrestling with the WIP begins in the lobby of Brookland’s Dance Place: four women in quilted skirts in a blend of pantomime, precise movement, and frustrated shouts of, “I’m sick and I’m tired,” capture the attention of everyone in the room almost instantly — even those still in line at the box […]
315 at Capital Fringe
I grew up near Niagara Falls. Every month in the good weather, a couple of people will step over the guard rail, slip into the river and surrender to its astonishing power, to gravity and to the rocks below. This information is not included in most tourist literature.
Dancing Ophelia at Capital Fringe
Without words, Shakespearean sonnets come to life in choreographer Alice Howes’ riveting new show Dancing Ophelia. This modern dance marvel offers an updated interpretation of several classic works including Othello, Macbeth, and Taming of the Shrew. If you enjoy impactful choreography, Dancing Ophelia can’t be missed! The collaborative effort of Trajectory Dance Project allowed Shakespeare’s […]
Here/Hear at Capital Fringe
This is the most tentative assessment I’ve ever given a show, Fringe or otherwise. This is because the featured player in this production is…well, it’s you. And I have no idea what you’re like.
‘Cheeky Monkey Sideshow Presents: CMSS X 3D, OK?’ at Capital Fringe
Cheeky Monkey Sideshow Presents: CMSS X 3D, OK? is an affectionate collection of extreme performances and biological oddities that makes you cringe and cheer. It is utterly unlike any other show you are likely to see at the Capitol Fringe Festival.
Neda Wants to Die at Capital Fringe
Neda wants to die, and if this play had worked as I think it was intended, you might have wanted to die a little, too. Regrettably, Luigi Laraia’s earnest, plodding script has a surfeit of rhetoric and a deficiency of story, so that despite some first-rate acting we feel not horror and revulsion but impatience […]
Barenaked Comedy at Capital Fringe
Barenaked Comedy brings together the “bar arts” of burlesque and standup comedy for an endlessly entertaining evening. This bawdy, adult showcase has a truly random assortment of talented performers, who prove that the whole is even greater than the sum of its parts.
The Bloody Banquet at Capital Fringe
I wouldn’t want to meet a Jacobean if The Bloody Banquet was their idea of drama. At the same time, I’m glad we have Brave Spirits Theatre to interpret and serve up this centuries-old cannibalistic romp for our oh-so-refined modern sensibilities.
Experimental at Capital Fringe
The “play within a play” device is a tough trick to pull off, even for the likes of Shakespeare. XY Players’ Experimental offers up a trippy tale about actors trapped in a murderous script, swinging unpredictably between serious mystery and campy satire.
